歌曲的背景是：

这首歌曲“金色的耶路撒冷”写于1967年，在以色列赢得当年的六日战争并重新统一耶路撒冷之后，成为非官方的第二首国歌。最初的歌曲叙述了犹太人两千年来渴望回到耶路撒冷的故事。那年，耶路撒冷的旧城是在约旦统治下; 犹太人被禁止进入，许多圣地被亵渎了。 歌曲发表仅三周后，六日战争就爆发了。 这首歌大大鼓舞了以色列军队的士气。 舍默尔甚至在战争和节日之前为他们演唱，使他们成为世界上首先听到它的人。 6月7日，以色列国防军从约旦人手中夺取了耶路撒冷东部和旧城。 当舍默尔听到伞兵在西墙上唱着“金色的耶路撒冷”时，她写了最后一节，扭转了第二节中原有的悲伤的诗句。 关于“山羊号角从圣殿山吹响”的一句是对实际发生在6月7日的事件的真实描写。
